I came over at the end of February to house sit for friends. They’re now marooned in Takaka and I’m marooned here. I’m miles from nowhere, in West Cork on a peninsular called the Sheep’s Head. Graham Norton is my neighbor which is very exciting, except he’s in London apparently.

I was born in Wellington and brought up in Palmerston North. I went to university in Canterbury then did a Masters in Business at Massey. My son was born in Auckland and my daughter in Christchurch. Madison is now a chef currently in quarantine on the Gold Coast. Ruby is an art student living on the Kapiti Coast

This house is beautiful and I’m privileged to be in a beautiful part of the world. I work online as an editor and writer. Oddly, I’ve had more work than I’ve ever had. My first novel was published ten years ago and I have had seven non-fiction books out. My favourite came out in January – it’s called The Smart Seekers Guide to Spiritual Bullshit.

It’s been three months on my own now on the corona coaster. About six weeks ago I had a moment and that lasted about a week, lonely isn’t the word, it’s the  isolation. I was really down, then I got angry about the lack of leadership in the UK and the US, then I got over that. In the last couple of days, I’ve been feeling it again. I do have a cat that I talk to.

I’ve been traveling for the last 4 years. I’m pleased to be here because the UK is a bit shite at the moment. I have one friend in London who has had five friends who’ve died. I think Boris is as bad as Trump – except he has a posh accent.

This interview and the others in the series are an extension of my new book “This Is Us” it is in all good bookshops in New Zealand now.

This Is Us – the diaspora in lockdown – these interviews are slightly different from the ones in the book as they focus on New Zealanders living abroad in this time of isolation.  Copyright Licensing have awarded me a grant to complete this project and convert these postings into a book.

If you can think of suitable interview subjects please let me know via pete@petecarter.nz – I currently need interviews in the more unusual places around the world.

Exisle have released This Is Us as an e-book you can buy it here.
